A recent inquiry into the Catholic Church in France discovered that 330,000 children have been the victims of sexual abuse since 1950, with 216,000 of them being abused by priests, nuns and other clerics.
The outcome of the inquiry was that the Catholic Church failed to implement measures to prevent abuse and that in some instances they even turned a blind eye to what was going one.
In 2020, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in the UK (IICSA) discovered that between 1940 and 2018, 390 Church of England clergy members were convicted of child sex offences.
Many victims reported that they tried to tell their parents about the abuse they were experiencing, but their parents did not believe that a priest would do such a thing and therefore the abuse continued. This has resulted in delayed convictions and many years of additional unnecessary suffering for the victims.
Unfortunately, abuse in church is something we see far too often. We represent a number of people who have been abused in churches and religious schools, assisting them to claim the compensation they deserve.
When an abuser does not have sufficient finances to pay compensation themselves, we can look at whether any organisation was responsible for safeguarding the victim and may be legally liable for the abuser’s actions. This could include a school, a church or a youth organisation.
So if you, or someone close to you, is also a victim of sexual abuse in church and would like to speak to a lawyer in confidence then either give us a call or drop us an email.
