Scout abuse has once again hit the headlines as a former Scout leader – branded “the Jimmy Savile” of the scouting world – is convicted of a further series of sexual offences against young boys.
John Bates, a former Police Officer and Scout leader is, for the second time, facing a prison sentence as result of sexually abusing children.
In 1982, Bates was charged with sexual offences against boys and convicted at Nottingham Crown Court. He was sentenced to serve four years in prison. At that time, other young boys who had been subjected to sexual abuse from Bates felt unable to speak out regarding their horrific experiences.
Sadly, a four-year jail term did not prove to be a deterrent to the predatory Bates and he went on to re-offend.
When Lincolnshire Police launched a further investigation into the activities of Bates during the 1970s and 1980s a large number of new victims came forward. Bates denied all 22 charges against him, which meant it was necessary for the victims to give evidence at trial. Their strength and determination in coming forward and testifying resulted in Bates being found guilty of 18 of the charges against him. On 20 May 2016, Bates was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison as a result.
