It has been announced that IICSA, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse chaired led by Hon. Dame Lowell Goddard, is to investigate the nation’s public and non-public institutions.
The Inquiry into sex abuse will look at whether public bodies and other institutions in England and Wales have properly complied with their duty of care to protect children from abuse. These institutions include church & religious organisations and local authorities.
The independent inquiry held its preliminary hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice on the 26th July 2016. The inquiry aims to give survivors of sex abuse a voice as well as identifying institutional failings that may exist.
The inquiry will also be demanding accountability for any past institutional failings identified and making recommendations for the future. It is hoped that the inquiry will ensure that children are properly protected from sexual abuse and that reports and concerns are dealt with properly.
